DIY String Art

Wow! It's been forever since I've done some DIY, and this time around I'm going to be showing you how to create some string art!

I have to do this for a window installation I'm doing for school, so that's why I chose this design, but you can easily input these simple steps into a design of your choice.

So, let's get started!!!

What You Need:

-A lot of patience
-Hammer
-Pins
-Board (relatively thick, wood works really well!)
-Yarn
-And a lot of spare time.

I am using these Precision Point Pins which are slightly thicker and longer than pins used on mannequins. These pins are much better for this kind of project, because you're going to be hammering them in to a thick material, so you don't want these to break. You can find this in a sewing store, or a sewing section of Wal-Mart.

Then I cut out my letter template, and started to hammer the pins around the letters.

This step will take majority of the time, and your fingers may hurt! So, once you've finished hammering the pins all around the letters, we're going to move onto the fun part.

The method I used was purely random, so I just started looping the yarn around the pins and tried to create some random zig zag shapes.

You want to make sure that you wrap the yarn around the pin one to two times to make sure it's not going to slip off. I also made sure the yarn went all the way around the perimeter of the letter, so it create the outline for the letters, and it can be easily recognizable.

To create more depth and interest, I went ahead and layered a darker pink yarn creating more random zig zag lines and making sure both light and dark pink yarn could be seen.

This is the final product. It's an easy way to instantly create a professional looking art piece. It can be a little time consuming, but it's cheap, and looks great.
I had to make this string art piece for a window installation, as I mentioned earlier, but this is how it turned out, and as you can see, the letters are legible and interesting to look at. So go on and try string art of your own!
